CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy scored the first 10 points of the game and led by as many as 26 in the first half en route to a 79-59 victory over Coe in a non-conference men's basketball game on Saturday at Hennessey Recreation Center.
The 18th-ranked Mustangs (8-1) have won seven straight and halted the Kohawks' three-game winning streak. Mount Mercy had lost the last two meetings with Coe since a 76-64 victory over the Kohawks on Nov. 17, 2009.
The Mustangs led, 10-0, before Nathan Joens knocked down a 3-pointer for Coe with 14:58 to go in the first period. Mount Mercy held a 34-8 advantage with 6:36 remaining, then took a 39-25 lead at the break, thanks in part of 13 points by senior forward Tyler Poldervaart.
The Kohawks came out strong after intermission and cut the Mustang lead to 46-41 with 15:21 on the clock. That was as close as Coe would get as Mount Mercy used an 11-2 run to lead, 57-43, after a fast-break alley-oop from senior guard Sid Beck to senior forward Chad Underwood with 11:36 to go.
Underwood was Mount Mercy's leading scorer with 14 points. He also had five rebounds and three blocked shots. Poldervaart and Coleman finished with 13 points apiece, senior guard Lamar Wall had 12 and senior guard Rashad Carrington 11 points and four assists. Junior forward LaDon Singleton collected 10 rebounds.
David Mataloni tallied 18 points and Andrew Wirth 17 for the Kohawks (3-2). Seth Light chipped in nine points and 11 rebounds, Joens eight points and 11 boards.
Mount Mercy hosts another Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent on Tuesday when Luther visits Hennessey Rec Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
