
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and scored 23 second-chance points to pick up its eighth straight win, 66-57, over Luther in a non-conference men's basketball game on Tuesday at Hennessey Recreation Center.
Although the Mustangs had their worst shooting performance of the season, their effort on the offensive glass helped overcome a 39.1 field goal percentage. They were just 6-of-17 from 3-point range, but committed only nine turnovers and blocked seven shots.
Senior forward Alex Coleman posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. He also had a pair of blocks and a team-best three assists. Senior guard Lamar Wall led the Mustangs (9-1) with 14 points. Senior forward Chad Underwood nearly had a double-double as well, finishing with 10 points, eight boards and three blocks. Senior guard Rashad Carrington tallied seven points and four steals.
Michael Crocker and Zach Matos scored 14 points apiece for the Norse (4-3). Matos also grabbed nine rebounds. Tyler Wedemeier and John Androus chipped in eight points each.
Earlier in the day, Mount Mercy moved up three spots in this week's NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The Mustangs are 15th with 169 points, just ahead of Southern Oregon (167 pts.) and behind Doane (Neb.) (179 pts.). Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) took over the top spot previously top-ranked Northwood (Fla.) dropped its first game of the season to fifth-ranked Embry-Riddle (Fla.).
Mount Mercy is at the SAU Classic this weekend in Davenport. The Mustangs face Benedictine on Friday at 5:30 p.m., then Emmaus on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Lee Lohman Arena on the St. Ambrose campus.
