CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Tenth-ranked Mount Mercy improved to 12-1 at home and clinched the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament with an 87-70 win over Grand View on Senior Night on Wednesday at Hennessey Recreation Center.
The Mustangs improved to 24-4 overall and 9-2 in conference play. That's the second-highest win total in school history and gives Head Coach Paul Gavin his 345th career victory. Win or lose in Saturday's regular season finale at Viterbo (Wis.), Mount Mercy hosts seventh-seeded AIB in an MCC quarterfinal on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Seniors Chad Underwood and Lamar Wall scored 20 points apiece against Grand View. Underwood also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists. Senior forward Alex Coleman added 13 points and eight boards, senior guard Sid Beck seven points and game-high seven assists.
Kody Ingle was 3-for-3 beyond the arc and finished with 11 points and five rebounds for the Vikings (11-13, 4-7 MCC). Taylor Bontrager had 10 points, while Adebayo Babalolo, Terrell Scruggs and Mitch Fondell chipped in eight points each.
The MCC Tournament bracket will be released on Saturday night. Top-seeded William Penn gets a bye in the first round. The other seven teams get things rolling on Wednesday with quarterfinal action at 7:00 p.m. The higher seed hosts each game.
