KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- This afternoon, Mount Mercy learned it would be playing in the national tournament. Tonight, the Mustangs found out who their opponent will be in the first round of the 22nd Annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship in Point Lookout, Mo.
The 12th-ranked Mustangs (27-5) take on 21st-ranked St. Thomas (Fla.) (20-11) on Thursday, March 7, at 5:45 p.m. at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.). Mount Mercy is also the No. 12 seed in the 32-team tournament, which included 20 automatic berths and 12 at-large bids. The Mustangs earned the third of those 12 at-large invitations.
The winner moves on to the second round against either fifth-seeded Warner Pacific (Ore.) (27-6) or Dakota State (S.D.) (22-9) on Friday, March 8, at 9:15 p.m. The Knights and Trojans close out the first round of the tournament on March 7 at 9:15 p.m.
William Penn (30-1), which defeated Mount Mercy in the championship game of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament, is the top seed overall at the national tournament. They open against McPherson (Kan.) on Wednesday, March 6, at 1:45 p.m.
The national tournament starts with first round games on Wednesday and Thursday, March 6-7, and wraps up nearly a week later with the national championship game on Tuesday, March 12, on the CBS Sports television network. The first 30 games of the tournament are streamed live by NeuLion, digital media partner of the NAIA, for a fee.
