CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy men's and women's bowling teams are ready to make a run at the Intercollegiate Team Championships in April. They begin their quest this weekend at a sectional qualifier in Las Vegas.
There are four sectional qualifiers for men and women, all held Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10. Sectional assignments are based on the Team Ranking System points earned in USBC Collegiate-certified competition throughout the season.
A total of 20 men's and 20 women's teams compete at each location. Sectionals consist of 32 Baker games each day. Total pinfall determines the top four teams in each division at each site, with those teams moving on to the 2013 Intercollegiate Team Championships April 18-20 in Lincon, Neb.
The men's sectional in Las Vegas is headlined by second-ranked Wichita State. Joining them are Mount Mercy, Arizona, Arizona State, Central Oklahoma, Clarke, Fresno State, Houston, Indiana Tech, Kansas, Midland, Missouri Baptist, North Texas, Northwestern Ohio, San Jose State, Texas A&M, UC-Davis, UNLV, Weber State and West Texas A&M.
On the women's side, Wichita State is also ranked second in the nation and is the top seed in Las Vegas. They will compete with Mount Mercy, Baker, Central Oklahoma, Clarke, Fresno State, Grand View, Indiana Tech, Maryland Eastern Shore, Midland, Mount Mercy, Northwestern Ohio, Stephen F. Austin and West Texas A&M.
The same four sectional sites also host qualifying for the Intercollegiate Singles Championships. On Friday, March 8, competitors will bowl six games with 24 men and 16 women advancing to the national singles tournament on April 16 in Lincoln. The eight additional men's selections will be based on the size of field at each location. Mount Mercy will have seven men and seven women competing in the singles competition.
