DES MOINES, Iowa -- Mount Mercy's Midwest Collegiate Conference opener with Grand View was scoreless for nine innings, but three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Vikings a 3-2 victory over the Mustangs on Monday.

The MCC opener for both teams turned into a pitcher's duel between junior right-hander Catie Flaucher and Haleigh Munson. But in the top of the 10th, a two-run homer by freshman left fielder LJ Putzier appeared to give Mount Mercy just what it needed.

Grand View responded with back-to-back singles to start the bottom half of the frame. Jessica Grochala doubled to tie the contest, then scored the game-winner on a one-out base hit by Abbey Wilmes, who also got the win in relief of Munson.

Flaucher (5-5) took the loss after scattering five hits over 9 1/3 innings. She struck out 10 and walked eight. Munson gave up just three hits in 8 2/3 innings, striking out 11 while walking seven.

Junior center fielder Erica Soppe, senior shortstop Brooklyn Schrader and freshman first baseman Amanda Gaffey had the other three Mustang hits in addition to Putzier's homer. Soppe also had two stolen bases, giving her 17 this spring.

Game two on Monday was postponed after three innings with the Mustangs leading, 4-1. That game will resume on Wednesday, April 17, prior to Mount Mercy's scheduled doubleheader with the Vikings in Cedar Rapids.

There are six more games on tap for the Mustangs this week. They go to Oskaloosa to face William Penn on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Mount Mercy hosts Viterbo (Wis.) and St. Ambrose on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Tomahawk Park.
