CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy baseball team extended its winning streak to four games and moved within a game of first place in the Midwest Collegiate Conference with a pair of comeback victories over St. Ambrose on Tuesday at Ken Charipar Field.
The Mustangs trailed, 6-3, in the opener before two-run singles by senior designated hitter Joe Arnold and junior first baseman Mark Mills gave Mount Mercy a 7-6 victory. Sophomore shortstop Austin Czerwiec went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in as well. Junior left-hander Jonathan Beltran (1-1) earned the win and junior righty Zach Wenzell the save.
Mount Mercy overcame a two-run deficit to win the nightcap, 4-3. Junior left fielder RJ Fuhr started the bottom of the sixth inning with a base hit. Four batters later, Mills came through again with a sacrifice fly and Arnold had an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. Freshman catcher Jimmy Lizarraga followed with the game-winning base hit up the middle and Wenzell (3-4) set the Bees down in order in the seventh.
The Mustangs (10-25-1, 6-6 MCC) are on the road for their final eight regular season games, starting with a trip to Des Moines to take on Grand View on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
