DES MOINES, Iowa -- Three-time NAIA javelin all-American Jenna Higgins defeated an entire field of mostly NCAA Division I talent to win the event at the 2013 Drake Relays on Friday at Drake Stadium.

Higgins, the 2011 NAIA national champion in the javelin, won it at Drake by nearly five feet. Her winning toss was a school record and NAIA-best 178'5". Runner-up Freya Jones of Georgia had a top throw of 173'-9". There were a total of 24 competitors in the event at the Drake Relays this spring.

Fellow NAIA all-Americans Larissa Wilden and Mwale Kapande also competed against stiff competition on Friday. Wilden finished 11th out of 18 competitors in the high jump with a leap of 5'-5 3/4". Kapande, who has battled injuries lately, placed 19th of 23 in the long jump at 17'-11 1/2".

Three Mount Mercy women's relay teams also ran today. The 4x100 meter relay squad of Maryann Dike, Higgins, Wilden and Kapande had some bad luck and were disqualified for missing a handoff. Higgins, Liz Mosbach, Justine Jensen and Taylor Zumbach ran 17th of 22 teams with a time of 1:47.83 in the 4x200 meter relay. In the 4x400 meter relay, Dike, Mosbach, Allison Scott and Regan Enfield finished 24th of 29 in 4:03.06.

Mount Mercy will run in the women's 4x800 meter relay, sprint medley relay and shuttle hurdle relay on Saturday. Also competing on Saturday are the Mustang men's sprint medley relay and distance medley relay teams.
