KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Mount Mercy's Jenna Higgins has been named the NAIA National Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, the national office announced on Wednesday.
The senior from Eldridge finished first in the javelin at the Drake Relays on April 26 in Des Moines. Higgins defeated 24 athletes in a field comprised almost entirely of NCAA Division I athletes. Her 178'-5" toss is tops in the NAIA this spring.
It's the second national athlete of the week honor for Higgins, who also won the award in May of 2012. She is a four-time NAIA all-American as a Mustang, including a three-time all-America performer in the javelin. Higgins won the national championships in the javelin as a sophomore.
Mount Mercy competes in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at the Lacey Track in Oskaloosa.
