SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- Senior forward Josip Druzijanic converted a penalty kick just three minutes into the match and that score held up, giving Mount Mercy a 1-0 victory over Dordt in a men's soccer season opener on Friday.
The Mustangs (1-0-0) out-shot the Defenders (0-1-0), 13-6, overall. They put seven shots on goal compared to only three for Dordt. Senior goalkeeper Harrison Burgess, a first-team all-Midwest Collegiate Conference standout last year, got the shutout with three saves.
Mount Mercy's home opener comes on Wednesday when the Mustangs host St. Francis (Ill.) at 5:30 p.m. at Lower Kingston Field in Cedar Rapids.
