CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy volleyball team opened the season with five matches on Thursday, Friday and Saturday during the annual Mustang Invitational at Hennessey Recreation Center.
The Mustangs won both matches on Thursday, defeating Mayville State (N.D.), 3-0, and Waldorf, 3-1. On Friday, Mount Mercy suffered a pair of 3-0 defeats to Pacific Union (Calif.) and Peru State (Neb.) before dropping another three-set match to Graceland on Saturday.
Offensively, the Mustangs were led by Leslie Hoffmann (48 kills), Cori Peterzalek (42 kills), Baylea Hinrichs (35 kills) and Kaitlyn Boyd (30 kills). Abbie Perez totaled 90 assists, Allie McQuiston 72. Perez also served seven aces in two Thursday matches.
Defensively, Boyd totaled 11 blocks and Hoffmann 10. Four of those were solo blocks for Hoffmann. Dig leaders were McQuiston (49), Kristin Peterson (37) and Peterzalek (37).
Mount Mercy (2-3) will try and snap a three-match losing streak at the St. Xavier-Trinity Christian Crossover Tournament his weekend in Chicago. The Mustangs will face Judson (Ill.) at 4:00 p.m. and Siena Heights (Mich.) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, then Trinity Christian (Ill.) at 10:00 a.m. and Roosevelt (Ill.) at noon on Saturday.
