CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mustang women's golf team opened the fall season this weekend, hosting the Mount Mercy Fall Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.
The Mustangs tied for second with William Penn, two strokes back of Grand View. Mount Mercy made the leap from third place after day one, shooting 318 on day two for a 657 total. Grand View ended up at 655.
Junior Mikayla Smith posted the second-best score of the final round, carding a 4-over-par 76 after an opening round 82. She finished third with a 158 total. Sydney Clement of Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) was medalist at 155.
Junior Madison Goodfellow (85-80=165) tied for ninth, junior Kelsey Dircks (91-77=168) and sophomore Meg Monson (83-85=168) tied for 15th and sophomore Sheridan Berte (89-87=176) tied for 29th for the Mustangs.
Freshman Ludmila Machnicki led Mount Mercy "B" with rounds of 92 for a 184 total, good for a tie for 51st. Freshman Mackenzie Noble (98-101=199) tied for 72nd, senior Kelsey Kernan (107-93=200) tied for 74th, sophomore Paige Wenger (98-105=203) placed 83rd and sophomore Alesha Steffensmeier (106-102-=208) tied for 90th.
Mount Mercy will compete at the Knox (Ill.) Invitational on Friday at noon at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg, Ill., then the Monmouth (Ill.) Invitational on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Gibson Woods Golf Course in Monmouth, Ill.
