POLK CITY, Iowa -- Mount Mercy finished strong on the final day of the Viking Classic and finished runner-up at the men's golf tournament hosted by Grand View on Monday and Tuesday at the Tournament Club of Iowa.
The Mustangs were third after round one, nine shots off the pace set by Ashford and one stroke back of Kirkwood. They gained some ground today and ended up with a two-day total of 606 (299-307). The host Vikings won the meet with a team score of 600. Next was Mount Mercy, then, Kirkwood (298-312=610), Ashford (290-323=613) and Northwestern (307-307=614).
Junior Jacob Selander carded rounds of 72 and 76, placing second with a 4-over-par 148 total. Junior Matt Schlueter finished 10th (76-74=150), junior Jack South tied for 14th (78-75-=153), senior Ryan Schrimper tied for 21st (73-82=155) and senior Lucas Mulholland tied for 50th (90-83=173). Nathan Chilcott of Kirkwood was medalist at 1-over-par (68-77=145).
Mount Mercy plays host to the Mustang "36" Challenge on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside. It will be 36 holes in one day, beginning at 8:00 a.m.
