MOLINE, Ill. -- Led by junior Matt Schlueter, the Mount Mercy men's golf team produced a runner-up finish at the Ashford Invitational on Tuesday at Short Hills Country Club.
The two-day event featured three rounds of golf. Schlueter opened with a 4-over-par 76 on Monday, then fired a pair of 3-under 69s on Tuesday to tie for medalist honors with a 2-under-par total of 214. He tied with Bellevue (Neb.) golfers Jose Vega, Nicolas Herrera and Tomas Ovejero.
Mount Mercy senior Ryan Schrimper (73-76-75=224) tied for 10th, junior Jacob Selander (75-77-77=229) tied for 15th, sophomore Warren Bynoe (78-76-76=230) tied for 17th and junior Jack South (82-77-76=235) finished 27th.
Bellevue ran away with the team title, earning a 31-stroke victory with an 865 total. Mount Mercy was next at 896, followed by St. Ambrose (900), Ashford (901), Augustana (Ill.) (927), Culver-Stockton (Mo.) (929), Indiana Tech (931), Purdue Calumet (Ind.) (947), Aurora (Ill.) (977) and Roosevelt (Ill.) (995).
Next up for the Mustangs is the Ronnie Eastman Invitational hosted by Viterbo (Wis.). Action gets underway at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday and 9:00 a.m. on Monday at the La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska, Wis.
