WAUWATOSA, Wis. -- After an historic second season of bowling last year, the Mount Mercy men's and women's bowling teams opened their third seasons of competition over the weekend at the Midwest Collegiate Bowling Championships.
The Mustangs finished 11th on the women's side with a total of 9,953 pins, the highest finish ever for the women's team at a Tier 1 tournament. The top five teams included Webber International (Fla.) (11,150 pins), Robert Morris (Ill.) (10,718), Wright State (10,656), Lindenwood (Mo.) (10,497) and Mount Mercy's Midwest Collegiate Conference rival, Grand View (10,407).
Leading the way for Mount Mercy was Tara Trcka, who finished 27th with an average of 182.22 and 1,640 pins. Kendra Ballensky (177.44 avg./1,597 pins) was 35th, Alicia Hartley (173.43/1,214) placed 109th, Samantha Smart (159.29/1,115) finished 120th, Tessa Friason (162.83/977) was 131st, Audrey Manternach (163.00/652) placed 162nd and Naomi Fisher (164.67/494) finished 174th.
There were 42 men's teams competing at the event. The Mustangs ended up 22nd with 10,683 pins. Robert Morris was your team champion with 11,881 pins. Davenport (Mich.) (11,774), Calumet St. Joseph (Ind.) (11,715), Notre Dame (Ohio) (11,710) and Webber International rounded out the top five.
Mount Mercy's Jeff McCann finished 46th with a 195.89 average and 1,763 pins. Daniel Healy (193.22/1,739) was 56th, Nathan Wright (190.57/1,334) placed 144th, Cody Taylor (183.50/1,101) finished 180th, Travis Smart (169.25/677) was 233rd and Ryan Miller (158.00/316) placed 277th.
Coming up for the Mustangs will be the Kegel/ISBPA Collegiate Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19-20, in Peoria, Ill.
