CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The second goal of the night for Charlie MacInnes was the game-winner in the sixth minute of overtime as St. Ambrose defeated Mount Mercy, 3-2, in a Midwest Collegiate Conference men's soccer match at Kingston Stadium.
The Mustangs surrendered the lead twice on Wednesday night. Freshman midfielder Milan Kovacs put Mount Mercy up, 1-0, in the 19th minute before MacInnes converted a penalty kick less than 20 seconds later. Kovacs assisted freshman forward Stefano Cozzareli's goal in the 41st minute and it was 2-1, Mustangs.
Ryan McEvoy notched the equalizer in the 63rd minute for the Bees (9-5-0, 3-1-0 MCC) and the match headed to overtime. Six minutes into the extra period, Mount Mercy gave up the ball near midfield, where Nick Stackhouse took it to the box and led MacInnes to the back of the net for the critical league win.
Mount Mercy (8-6-0, 2-2-0 MCC) has three straight games on the road, including its next two against top-10 opponents. The Mustangs are at fifth-ranked Grand View on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. in Des Moines, then travel to Clinton to face seventh-ranked Ashford on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
