CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- This year's Midwest Collegiate Conference Cross Country Championships are being held by Mount Mercy University at Jones Park on Saturday, Nov. 9. Starting at 11 a.m. will be the men's 8K with the women's 5K following at noon.
There are six conference teams in the MCC for cross country: Mount Mercy, Clarke, Viterbo, Grand View, St. Ambrose and William Penn. For a majority of this fall, the Mount Mercy men have been ranked number one in the league, with St. Ambrose keeping steady at number one for the women.
The next stop after the conference championships is nationals, which is being held at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kan. In order to move on to the national championships, teams must win the conference. Individuals may qualify if they are in the top five not on the winning team. Each year there are typically around 600 runners, men and women combined, at the national championships.
Last year, St. Ambrose took home the team championships for both men and women. Individual men's champion was John Darmody of St. Ambrose. Individual women's champion was Anne Bruno from Mount Mercy.
