CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Sophomore guard Makenzie Zeitler knocked down three big free throws over the last 11 seconds of the game, helping the Mount Mercy women's basketball team hold on for a 64-61 victory over Simpson on Saturday at Hennessey Recreation Center.
Neither team led by more than eight points, and the Mustangs (9-4) took the lead for good on back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomore guard Danielle Herdliska and freshman guard Alisa Weiland with 10:46 left in the second period. Mount Mercy outrebounded the Storm, 44-40, and finished with 16 turnovers despite 13 miscues in the first half.
Herdliska and Weiland, who was 3-for-3 beyond the arc, scored 11 points apiece for the Mustangs. Zeitler totaled 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Carrie Wood tallied six points and four boards, senior forward Amanda Frost pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and junior guard Christa Oldham had seven boards and a game-high seven assists.
Morgan Mauro and Katie Ahrenholtz scored 18 points each for Simpson (4-4). All of Mauro's points came from 3-point range, while Ahrenholtz got seven of hers from the free throw line. Markayla Mahr chipped in seven points and five rebounds.
Mount Mercy (9-4), which has already matched its win total from a year ago, will head to Florida after finals week to take on Northwood (Fla.) on Saturday, Dec. 21, in West Palm Beach.
