CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A second-half comeback by Mount Mercy led to overtime, but Coe owned the extra period and won the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic with an 83-79 victory over the Mustangs on Sunday at Eby Fieldhouse.
The Kohawks (5-5) ended a four-game winning streak for the Mustangs (11-5), who lost for the first time this season on an opponent's home floor. Coe outrebounded Mount Mercy, 47-31, and held a 23-11 advantage at the free throw line.
Senior forward Amanda Frost had a big day for the Mustangs, tallying 27 points, four rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocked shots. Junior guard Christa Oldham added 17 points, eight boards and four steals. Sophomore guard Makenzie Zeitler and junior guard Paige Last had nine points apiece.
A 71-49 victory over Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday put Mount Mercy into the championship game. Sophomore guard Callan Timms led the way with 16 points, while Frost posted 11 points and eight rebounds. Oldham and freshman forward Abby Herb scored nine points each and senior guard Carrie Wood finished with five assists.
Mount Mercy takes on Luther in its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 2:00 p.m. in Decorah.
