CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The top two women's basketball teams in the Midwest Collegiate Conference squared off on Wednesday night at Hennessey Recreation Center, with league-leading St. Ambrose ending Mount Mercy's six-game winning streak with a 79-71 victory over the Mustangs.
The Bees (19-5, 8-0 MCC) have now won 13 straight and took a two-game lead over the Mustangs (17-8, 6-2 MCC) in the hunt for the MCC regular season title. Four games remain before the MCC Tournament begins on Thursday, Feb. 27. St. Ambrose swept the season series with Mount Mercy, winning in Davenport last month, 74-68.
Sophomore guard Makenzie Zeitler led three Mustangs in double figures with 14 points. She also collected three assists and three steals. Freshman forward Abby Herb added 13 points and seven rebounds, senior forward Amanda Frost 11 points and 12 boards. Junior guards Christa Oldham and Paige Last each scored nine points and Oldham dealt four assists.
Devan Griffin scored a game-high 20 points for the Bees. Lauren Cash had 17 points, Ashley Dexter and Sydney Greiner 10 each. Dexter also tallied nine assists and Katie Jensen pulled down 10 rebounds.
Mount Mercy is off this weekend, then is back on the road to take on Clarke (11-3, 5-3 MCC) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Dubuque. The Mustangs beat the Crusaders, 62-50, on Jan. 15 at Hennessey Rec Center.
