CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- William Penn came from behind to win the opener and Mount Mercy returned the favor in game two as the Statesmen and Mustangs split a Midwest Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader at Ken Charipar Field.
The lead changed hands four times in game one before a seven-run seventh inning clinched a 13-6 victory for William Penn. Mount Mercy junior first baseman Patrick Haney went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and senior right fielder Zak Morgan and freshamn second baseman Devin Holmes each had two hits apiece. Junior shortstop Austin Czerwiec added a two-run home run for the Mustangs.
Haney blasted a three-run homer and Czerwiec capped off a five-run third inning with a two-run double as Mount Mercy took the nightcap, 6-3. Holmes added two more hits for the Mustangs. Czerwiec (4-1) also got the complete-game victory, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits while striking out five and walking three.
The Mustangs (11-24, 7-11 MCC) and Statesmen (22-14, 9-9 MCC) square off again tomorrow night, this time at 5:00 p.m. in Oskaloosa.
