OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- The season came to a close for the fourth-seeded Mount Mercy softball team today with a pair of losses to William Penn and St. Ambrose at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Final Four at Penn Field.
An unearned run turned out to be enough for top-seeded William Penn in game two of the tournament. The Lady Statesmen bunted home that run in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on for the 1-0 win.
Senior right-hander Catie Flaucher (15-8) scattered seven hits over six innings while striking out nine and walking a batter. William Penn's Jennifer Whitehead limited the Mustangs to four hits with eight strikeouts and a walk.
Mount Mercy then faced an elimination game against third-seeded St. Ambrose, which opened the tournament with a 8-2 loss to second-seeded Grand View. The Bees jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed. They led, 8-1, before the Mustangs scored four times in the final two innings to close the gap.
Sophomore left fielder LJ Putzier homered twice and drove in three runs for Mount Mercy. Sophomore first baseman Amanda Gaffey went 2-for-4 and sophomore left-hander Hannah Petersen and sophomore second baseman Brianna Sturtz each drove in a run. The Mustangs finish the season at 25-21 overall.
