CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Opening the season with a win is nothing new for the Mount Mercy women's soccer team, which erupted for five goals and held off Roosevelt (Ill.), 5-4, on Sunday at Lower Kingston Field.
Five different players found the back of the net for a Mustang squad that scored just 10 goals all of last season. It's their highest single-game scoring total since a 10-0 victory at AIB on Oct. 6, 2012.
Junior Lauren Konchar had a hand in three of her team's four first-half tallies. She scored the game's first goal in the 11th minute. After freshman Cally Salter converted an assist from Taylor Eaker in the 18th minute, Konchar set up scores by senior forward Danielle Herdliska and Lauren Plante in the 32nd and 44th minute, respectively.
Roosevelt got on the board just before halftime and added two more scores in the first 10 minutes of the second period to get within 4-3. Eaker gave the Mustangs a two-goal cushion in the 79th minute before the Lakers cut that deficit in half again. Mount Mercy held them off for the final six minutes and will take a 1-0 mark into Thursday's contest at Grace (Neb.) at 4:00 p.m. in Omaha, Neb.
