JOLIET, Ill. -- Sophomore midfielder Kevon Farquharson scored twice and sophomore goalkeeper Goar Kempf-Heitlinger stopped five shots to lead the Mount Mercy men's soccer team to a 3-1 defeat of St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday.
Farquharson started the scoring when he knocked in a ball that bounced off the post in the 28th minute. Sophomore forward Marco Fichtner converted a penalty kick five minutes later and the Mustangs led, 2-0, at halftime.
Mohamad Rashid got the Saints on the board just three minutes into the second period, and it remained a one-goal game until Farquharson's second score in the 80th minute. Mount Mercy defeated St. Francis (0-1-0) for the second year in a row and won its season opener for the third consecutive season.
The Mustangs (1-0-0) are on the road again on Thursday, heading to Omaha, Neb., to take on Grace (Neb.) at 6:00 p.m. Mount Mercy's home opener is Saturday against Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) at 2:00 p.m. at Lower Kingston Field.
