LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Mount Mercy's Christa Oldham scored 17 of a career-high 31 points at the free throw line on Wednesday, leading the Mustangs to a 78-68 victory over Viterbo (Wis.) in a Midwest Collegiate Conference game at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium.
Oldham, who set school records for free throws made (18) and attempted (21) in a Jan. 18 win at William Penn, went 17-of-20 at the line against the V-Hawks. Both of those numbers are second on that single-game list. Makenzie Zeitler was 11-of-13 at Viterbo as the Mustangs were 33-of-43 at the foul line.
Mount Mercy (15-12, 6-3 MCC) scored the first 13 points of the game and never trailed. The V-Hawks finally got on the board with 12:53 left in the first half but trailed the Mustangs, 39-27, at intermission. Mount Mercy led by as many as 20 points after the break and didn't allow Viterbo (7-20, 3-6 MCC) to get closer than eight during the final 20 minutes.
Oldham had six rebounds and three steals to go with her 31 points. Zeitler finished with 13 points and a game-high eight boards. Danielle Herdliska joined them in double figures with 12 points, Abby Herb added nine points and five rebounds.
The Mustangs, winners of six of their last seven games since a loss at home to Viterbo on Jan. 14, are at AIB on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tip at the AIB Activities Center in Des Moines.
