Photo of Justin LeasWAVERLY, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy men's golf team opened the spring season at the Wartburg Invitational Friday and Saturday at Centennial Oaks Golf Course.

The Mustangs finished 16th out of 18 teams with a two-day total of 643. They shot 320 on day two after opening the event with a 323. St. Thomas (Minn.) led wire-to-wire and claimed the team title at 597. Luther and Nebraska Wesleyan were next at 598, followed by Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) and host Wartburg at 599.

Senior Justin Leas was Mount Mercy's top finisher in a field of 91 golfers, tying for 25th after rounds of 73 and 80 gave him a 153 total. Junior Ben Montgomery tied for 40th (82-74=156), junior Chad Worley tied for 72nd (82-82=164), junior Trent Jordan tied for 79th (86-84=170), and freshman Jon Larson placed 82nd (88-84=172). Andy Petersen of Central posted a 2-under-par 142, including rounds of 72 and 70, to take medalist honors.

Mount Mercy will join Coe, Cornell, and Kirkwood for the Metro Tournament on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Ellis Golf Course in Cedar Rapids.
