CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Cody Bell homered twice and drove in five runs and Cody Collender went deep as well, helping the Mount Mercy baseball team rebound from a three-run deficit to defeat Cornell, 11-10, in a non-conference contest on Tuesday at Ken Charipar Field at Xavier High School.
The Rams scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead, but an RBI double by Collender followed by Bell's first home run of the night in the bottom of the frame put the Mustangs in front for good. Cornell trailed, 11-3, after seven innings before putting together a late-inning rally. The Rams got two runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth, then had the go-ahead run on base when Blake Hargens closed the door for Mount Mercy.
Blake Willenborg (1-0) had a solid outing, pitching himself out of a shaky third inning to pick up his first collegiate win. The freshman left-hander allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out three and walking two in five innings of work. Ryan Flaherty pitched two hitless innings and struck out three. Hargens followed Bryan Natter and Adam Marra to earn his first save.
Bell finished the night 2-for-5 with five runs batted in. Collender was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Devin Holmes and Noah Dostal had three hits apiece and Christian Knox added a pair of hits. Mount Mercy's long homestand continues this weekend. The Mustangs (14-22, 6-14 Heart) host Benedictine (Kan.) (25-16, 14-6 Heart) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Ken Charipar Field.
