OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy women's golf team improved by three strokes on day two and finished sixth of eight teams at the Mike "Fluff" Cowan Invitational at the Iowa Intercollegiate Championships at Edmundson Golf Course.
The Mustangs opened with a team score of 358 on Monday, followed by a 355 on Tuesday for a 713 total. Defending champion and tournament host William Penn took the team title at 622. Rounding out the top five were William Penn "B" (660), Baker (Kan.) (673), Peru State (Neb.) (696) and Simpson (697). Mount Mercy was sixth, Missouri Valley (728) seventh and Iowa Wesleyan (894) eighth.
Six Mustangs competed at the event. Cheyenne Broquard carded an 84 and 88 for a 172 total to tie for 18th. Allyson Wertz (89-87=176) tied for 23rd, Kayla Stammer (93-90=183) and Valarie Davidson (92-91=183) tied for 31st, Mackenzie Noble (97-90=187) tied for 33rd and Hayley Peterson (101-102=203) tied for 44th.
Next up for Mount Mercy is the Clarke Invitational on Saturday at Eagle Ridge North Golf Course in Galena, Ill. After that, the Mustangs are back at Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa for the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship on Monday and Tuesday, May 8-9.
