CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Needing a win to earn the final spot in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament, Mount Mercy couldn't get past ninth-ranked Clarke and fell, 13-5, in the final game of the regular season Monday night at Ken Charipar Field at Xavier High School.
The Mustangs and Crusaders picked up where they left off on Saturday when rain halted play with runners on first and second and the scored tied 1-1 in the top of the third inning. Clarke wasted no time getting to new pitcher Cody Bell, tacking on two more runs in the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Mount Mercy managed three runs without getting a hit in their half of the inning to move in front, 4-3.
After a scoreless fourth, the Crusaders (42-10, 26-6 Heart) put the game away with eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. A three-run homer by Evan Faccenda and RBI doubles by John Collins, Ryan Siems, Ricky Marinez and Jacob Blunt were more than enough to end Mount Mercy's hopes of a postseason berth. Ian Fitzsimmons homered in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-5 before Clarke added two more in the seventh for the final margin.
Fitzsimmons, Reid Bonner, Trey Muilenburg and Ben Larson each drove in a run in the Mustangs' final game at Xavier High School. Mount Mercy (19-29, 11-21 Heart) will be at its very own Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex next spring. Graceland (19-33, 12-20 Heart) secured the final spot in the Heart of America tournament by virtue of a split with Culver-Stockton (Mo.) on Monday in Lamoni.
