CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Two more Mount Mercy track & field standouts punched their tickets to the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships later this month. Armando Arellanos hit the qualifying standard in the hammer throw at Thursday's SAU Mini-Meet in Davenport, while Katie Hoffert's time at the Starved Rock Country Half Marathon in Ottawa, Ill., secured a spot at nationals.
In his final throw on Thursday, Arellanos eclipsed the NAIA "B" qualifying standard of 165'-8" with a toss of 168'-4". That puts him 25th in the NAIA this spring. At Saturday's half marathon, Hoffert crossed the finish line in 1:30:22, two minutes ahead of the NAIA "B" qualifying pace (1:32:00) and nearly surpassing the NAIA's automatic qualifying mark of 1:30:00.
Arellanos and Hoffert join Evan Bowman (marathon) for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala. The meet takes place May 25-27 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadum.
