DAVENPORT, Iowa -- After finding themselves tied at one set apiece, the Mount Mercy women's volleyball team limited St. Ambrose to a mere nine points in the third set to take back momentum and defeat the Bees in four sets, 25-12, 23-25, 25-9, 26-24, in a non-conference contest on Tuesday at Lee Lohman Arena.
The Mustangs cruised in the opening set, but St. Ambrose fought back to take a tight set number two. Mount Mercy turned on the offense in the third set, hitting a season-high .276 while limiting the Bees to single digits. It's the fewest points allowed in a set this season by the Mustangs.
Mount Mercy smashed 17 kills in a back-and-forth, decisive fourth set. Maddie Bell had the first double figure kill total of her career, leading the Mustangs with 10. She had no attack errors and a .417 hitting percentage.
As a team, Mount Mercy had a .213 attack percentage compared to just .074 for the Bees. Becca Thomson and Alyssa Weldon added nine kills each and Vik Meade and Olivia Coe drilled eight apiece. Thomson also had a match-high 26 digs. Lauren Stopko and Weldon had 17 and 15 digs, respectively. Kayla Daggett dished out 29 assists, Caiti Peterson 12.
Mount Mercy (3-2) has a week off before opening Heart of America Athletic Conference play against Peru State (Neb.) (1-1, 1-0 Heart) on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 6:00 p.m. in Peru, Neb.
