CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Fernando Pacheco's second goal of the match with 11 minutes to go in regulation was the game-winner as Western Illinois rallied to defeat Mount Mercy, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer on Sunday afternoon at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.
The Mustangs, making their debut on a new home field, jumped on top early when Ljubisa Palic set up James Conversano to give them a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest. That held up for most of the half until Pacheco's unassisted score in the 38th minute leveled the match.
The Leathernecks (1-2-0) got some momentum going after intermission and eventually did what Mount Mercy could not, which was capitalize on opportunities. Pacheco was there to clean up when Paul Kirdorf's laser bounced off the crossbar in the 79th minute, giving Western Illinois their first win in three outings this season.
The Mustangs (1-1-0) host St. Ambrose on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at the Plaster Athletic Complex.
