GALENA, Ill. -- Philip Nelson was medalist with a three-over-par 75 and William Bruyeres tied for fifth at four-over-par, leading the 18th-ranked Mount Mercy men's golf team to a victory in their season debut at Eagle Ridge South Golf Course on Wednesday.
Nelson was one of four golfers to shoot 75 and earned medalist honors on a cardback. Bruyeres was only one shot back with a 76. Nile Happel tied for 16th with an 80, Ben Jones tied for 21st after shooting an 81 and Thomas Schuhkraft was tied for 24th with an 82.
Mount Mercy Gold was led by Matt Caulfield, who carded a seven-over-par 79 and tied for 11th place. George Long tied for 16th with an 80, Tyler Breitbach tied for 24th after recording an 82, Tyler Stueck tied for 30th with an 83 and Oscar Anderson tied for 65th after a 93.
The Mustangs won the team title with a 312 total. Clarke (319), Loras (319), Viterbo (Wis.) (320) and Dubuque (322) rounded out the top five. Mount Mercy is back in action this weekend, hosting the Klocke Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion.
