DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Maddie Bell was named to the all-tournament team as the Mount Mercy women's volleyball team went 2-2 at the Clarke Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9, at the Kehl Center. The Mustangs beat Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) and St. Francis (Ill.) on Friday before falling to Trinity Christian (Ill.) and Northwestern on Saturday.
Mount Mercy came out strong Friday afternoon, defeating the Wolves in straight sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-23) while totaling 41 kills. Bell paced all players with 10 kills with only one error. Alyssa Weldon added nine kills and Vik Meade seven. Kayla Daggett dished out 30 assists to eight different players. The Mustangs limited Cardinal Stritch to an attack percentage of .181 and less than .200 in each set.
In Friday's second match, Mount Mercy squared off against a Saints team receiving national attention. St. Francis took set one, but the Mustangs bounced back to get the next two. The Saints (5-9) took set four before Mount Mercy outlasted them in the fifth set (22-25, 25-21, 25-11, 17-25, 18-16). Meade tallied 14 kills, Weldon 13 and Olivia Coe 12. Becca Thomson had nine kills and 14 digs. Lauren Stopko had a match-high 24 digs and four service aces. Caiti Peterson handed out 29 assists, Daggett 18.
Day two of the tournament proved more difficult for the Mustangs. Mount Mercy had a chance to avenge a loss to Trinity Christian (Ill.) earlier in the season, but the Trolls edged the Mustangs in sets one and two then put them away in set three (26-24, 25-23, 25-17). Meade and Weldon each collected nine kills, with Bell adding eight. Trinity Christian is the only team to hold the Mustangs to an attack percentage under a .100 this season, and they've done it twice.
In their fourth and final match of the tournament, Mount Mercy faced off against 14th-ranked Northwestern. The Red Raiders (13-1) hit .422 as a team and defeated the Mustangs in straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-15). Daggett had 26 assists, nine of which went to Coe and another eight to Meade. Stopko and Thomson both had seven digs apiece.
Bell was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 6.5 kills per match. She also had three solo blocks and three service aces in four matches. Joining her on the all-tournament team was AJ Horstman (Northwestern), Lauryn Hilger (Northwestern), Danielle Oeverman (Trinity Christian), Ashley Smith (Clarke), Brooklyn Withey (St. Francis) and Lauren Dehn (Avila).
Mount Mercy (5-5, 0-1 Heart) returns to Dubuque to take on Clarke (11-2, 2-0 Heart) in a Heart of America Athletic Conference match on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Kehl Center.
