MARION, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy women's golf team edged Bethany (Kan.) for the championship at Saturday and Sunday's Klocke Classic hosted by the Mustangs at Hunters Ridge Golf Course. Mount Mercy and Bethany tied at 691, but the Mustangs earned the title based on fifth-player scores.
Mount Mercy opened the tournament with a 343 on Saturday, then shot 348 on Sunday. Kayla Stammer led the Mustangs, placing third after rounds of 80 and 89 for a 169 total. Breanna Maher (89-83=172) finished sixth, Allyson Wertz (85-89=174) was seventh, Valarie Davidson (89-87=176) placed 10th and Cheyenne Broquard (90-89=179) was 11th.
Mount Mercy Gold was led by Mackenzie Noble, who carded an 89 and 82 for a 171 score and a tie for fourth place. Peyton Staab (97-94=191) was 19th, Hayley Peterson (105-92=197) finished 26th, Samantha Friederichs (105-96=201) tied for 28th and Jayden Usher (111-96=207) was 30th.
After Mount Mercy and Bethany, it was Waldorf (353-356=709), Peru State (Neb.) (380-378=758) and Mount Mercy Gold (396-364=760) rounding out the top five. The Mustangs will be in Sioux City for the Briar Cliff Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
