Photo of Will ScholerCEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy opened the weekend with a victory over Viterbo (Wis.), but the V-Hawks won the final two games of the Midwest Collegiate Conference baseball series at Ken Charipar Field at Xavier High School.

An eight-run first inning powered the Mustangs in Saturday's series-opening, 16-6 victory. Junior third baseman Albert Diaz was 2-for-2, including a two-run double, and finished with four RBIs. Sophomore left fielder Brent Pankow went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs driven in.

Junior first baseman Jeremy Glunt had two hits and a pair of RBIs, senior shortstop Will Scholer added two hits, and senior center fielder Matthew Mercier hit a two-run homer, his fourth of the year. Senior right-hander Erik Morales (5-4) allowed four earned runs on 11 hits in five innings to get the win.

The two teams combined for 21 runs, 29 hits, and seven errors in Viterbo's 12-9 win in the nightcap. Scholer homered and doubled while driving in four runs. Pankow and senior shortstop Jason Novack collected two hits apiece. Viterbo's Kyle Dreger earned the win with 3-1/3 innings of relief, and Mount Mercy junior Drew Stephens (2-3) got the loss in relief of juniors Derrick Weber and Eric Bearbower.

The V-Hawks never trailed in Sunday's series finale, earning an 11-7 victory over the Mustangs. Scholer stayed hot at the plate, going 3-for-5 with another home run and three RBIs. Pankow was 2-for-5 with an RBI, junior right fielder Sebastian Vibiano drove in a pair of runs, and Mercier and senior catcher Rey Lopez had two hits each.

Mount Mercy (16-23, 9-6 MCC) travels to Oskaloosa on Wednesday for a conference doubleheader with league-leading William Penn (22-13, 12-5 MCC) at 4:00 p.m.
