Clarke scored three first-inning runs, but Mount Mercy got one back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by senior designated hitter Will Scholer. The Mustangs tacked on three more in the third and led, 4-3. The Crusaders tied it in the sixth, then moved ahead for good in the seventh. They added five more runs over the final two innings for the final margin.

Scholer and junior first baseman Jeremy Glunt finished with two hits and an RBI apiece. Senior left-hander Sean Plummer got the loss despite giving up just one earned run in relief of junior righty Derrick Weber, who allowed four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three in 5 1/3 innings.

The Mustangs wrap up conference play with a three-game set against Ashford this weekend in Cedar Rapids. A single, nine-inning contest is slated for Friday at 6:00 p.m., with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
