CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy baseball team got an RBI single by senior pinch hitter Rey Lopez to beat Ashford, 11-10, then used a five-run eighth inning to defeat intra-city rival Coe, 9-8, in a pair of nine-inning games on Sunday at Ken Charipar Field at Xavier High School.

The Mustangs scored the tying run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning against Ashford, then got a pinch-hit, run-scoring single from Lopez in the eighth to get the league win over the Saints (15-33, 5-19 MCC).

Sophomore right fielder Brent Pankow went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, senior designated hitter Cody Koch was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs driven in, and senior shortstop Will Scholer finished with a pair of hits and an RBI for Mount Mercy. Sophomore right-hander Dustin BeGuhn (2-6) was the winner in relief, and senior lefty Sean Plummer earned his first save with 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

A two-run single by freshman third baseman Jacob Thompson capped a five-run eighth in Mount Mercy's win over Coe (21-14). Thompson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and senior center fielder Matthew Mercier 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Koch and senior shortstop Jason Novack also had two hits apiece for the Mustangs (20-29). After getting the save in game one, Plummer got the victory against the Kohawks. Senior right-hander Erik Morales picked up the save with a scoreless inning of work.

With the regular season in the rearview mirror, the Mustangs look ahead to the 2010 MCC Baseball Tournament, which gets underway on Friday at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo. Pairing for the tournament will be announced late Sunday or early Monday.
