CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy volleyball team started the 2010 season with a split of two matches on the opening day of the Zio Johno's Mustang Invitational on Friday at Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs won a four-set match against Cardinal Stritch (Wis.), winning 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16. Sophomore outside hitter Brittney Thomas, junior outside hitter Becca Lampe, and junior middle blocker Deidre Schaefer had nine kills each and senior Amanda Menke eight to lead the Mount Mercy offense. Schaefer added four blocks, Thomas a team-high 16 digs, and sophomore setter Hope Baumgartner 18 assists.

Mount Mercy (1-1) dropped a hard-fought, three-set match to Trinity Christian (Ill.) later in the day. Lampe's 13 kills led the way for the Mustangs. Baumgartner collected 23 more assists and junior libero Beth Ripperger a team-best 13 digs in Mount Mercy's 25-22, 27-25, 26-24 loss to the Trolls.
