CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Sophomore midfielder Kandice Kiernan scored three times to lead the Mount Mercy women's soccer team to a 5-1, season-opening victory over Briar Cliff on Saturday at Lower Kingston Field.

Kiernan started the scoring in the first minute, giving the Mustangs an early lead on an assist by junior defender Caitlin Smith. Kindra Sanchez tied the game a minute later, but Mount Mercy rattled off four unanswered goals the rest of the way to back freshman goalkeeper Jerica Christensen, who finished with six saves.

The Mustangs hit the road on Tuesday for a 5:00 p.m. match against Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) in Hannibal, Mo.
