RAPIDS, Iowa -- Wartburg rattled off the final five points of a
decisive fifth set to defeat Mount Mercy, 17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25,
15-11 in non-conference volleyball on Wednesday at Hennessey Recreation
Center.
The Mustangs had the Knights -- the preseason favorite to win the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference -- on their heels during the opening set. Wartburg (1-0) took the next two games before Mount Mercy (4-2) tied the match in a tight fourth set.
After the Mustangs scored the first four points in the fifth set, the Knights clawed back to tie the game at 8-8. The score was tied, 11-11, before a pair of errors by Mount Mercy and a service ace and kill by Wartburg's Britlyn Sieck ended the match.
Junior middle blocker Deidre Schaefer and junior outside hitter Becca Lampe had 11 kills apeice to lead the Mustangs. Schaefer also collected three solo blocks, just one less than senior middle blocker Jena Blint, who finished with five service aces to go along with those four solo blocks.
After a week off, Mount Mercy opens Midwest Collegiate Conference play against William Penn on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at Hennessey.
