Iowa -- The Mount Mercy men's golf team shaved 10 strokes off their
score on day two and finished runner-up at their very own Cropper Golf
Classic on Sunday at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.
In a 21-team field, the Mustangs ended up 12 strokes back of Midwest Collegiate Conference rival Viterbo (Wis.), who claimed the team title with a two-day total of 594. Mount Mercy was next at 606, followed by Central "A" at 607 and Black Hawk (Ill.) and Lindenwood (Mo.) "B" at 617.
With rounds of 73 and 75, Mustang junior Derek McConnell finished in a tie for fourth place at 4-over-par 148. Senior Ross McLaughlin carded rounds of 78 and 74 (152) and tied for 12th. Junior Ned Carter (78-75=153) and freshman Ryan Schrimper (79-74=153) tied for 17th.
A total of 110 golfers competed for 21 teams. Other Mount Mercy competitors included junior Declan Hasson (T47th/160), sophomore A.J. Castro (T 54th/161), and junior Tim Hagge (T83/168). Viterbo's Derek Meier was medalist with an even-par, 144 that counted rounds of 70 and 74.
Mount Mercy travels to Peosta for the Clarke Invitational Sunday-Monday, Sept. 19-20. Action gets underway at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday and 9:00 a.m. on Monday at Thunder Hills Golf Course.
