Iowa -- Mount Mercy junior Ned Carter fired a 4-under-par 67 in
Monday's final round to claim medalist honors and lead the Mustangs to
their fourth tournament win this fall at the Statesmen Fall Classic at
Blue Top Ridge Golf Course.
Mount Mercy made a huge jump on the final day, going from a third-place 317 in Sunday's opening round to a 291 team score on day two for a 10-stroke victory over Wheaton (Ill.). Host William Penn was third at 620, followed by Grand View Red at 624 and Central White at 627.
Carter opened the tournament with a 6-over-par 77 on Sunday before his season-best 67 the next day. He finished at 144, two strokes better than Seb Stobart of William Penn, who had rounds of 72 and 74 for a 146 total. Mount Mercy junior Derek McConnell carded a 76 and 73 to finish third at 149.
Freshman Ryan Schrimper tied for 16th (82-74=156), junior Declan Hasson tied for 23rd (82-77=159), and senior Ross McLaughlin tied for 43rd (88-78=166) for the Mustangs, who also won the Loras Invitational, Clarke Fall Classic, and Metro Tournament this fall.
