Track & Field - Mon, Apr. 11, 2011
Higgins won the javelin for the second time in as many meets. She qualified for the NAIA national meet last week in Mount Mercy's season opener, then bettered her debut performance by nearly three feet at Saturday's Cornell Invitational. Higgins throw was a season-best 148'-4", which is second in school history.
In all, Mount Mercy posted three wins at Cornell on Saturday. In addition to Higgins in the javelin, freshman Anne Bruno won the 5,000 meter run (19:40.94) and junior Jacqueline Kane took the 400 meter dash in school-record fashion (:59.05). Senior Kelsey Hansen also posted a school record in the hammer throw (152'-8").
"The meet went pretty well for us," said Head Coach Jamie Jimison. "In spite of being a little beat up, we were able to come away with some strong performances across the board. I'm excited to see how the season progresses from here."
There were several Mount Mercy all-time top 10 marks on Saturday. Those came from Higgins in the javelin, senior Beth Ripperger in the 1,500 meter run (4:48.95), freshman Allie Ziskovsky in the discus (127') and shot put (39'-6"), freshmen TJ Mosbach (4:12.90) and Mitch Johnson (4:14.93) in the men's 1,500 meters and junior Cody Robertson in the men's 110 meter hurdles prelims (:16.47) and finals (:16.49).
The women's 4x100 meter relay team of sophomores Larissa Wilden and Higgins, junior Cortni Kooi and senior Janae Rosien (:49.78) also recorded an all-time top 10, as did the 4x800 meter relay squad of Ripperger, Kane, junior Britney Yotter and sophomore Shelby Daisy (9:45.39).
The Mount Mercy men's and women's track & field teams compete at the Jim Duncan Invitational this weekend at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Events begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
