Iowa -- Mount Mercy finished fourth at a weather-plagued Midwest
Collegiate Conference Men's Golf Championship over the weekend at Blue
Top Ridge Golf Course. Junior Derek McConnell placed fifth for the
Mustangs at the 45-hole event.
Grand View defended its conference title with a dominant performance, finishing 36 strokes in front of runner-up St. Ambrose. The fifth-ranked Vikings, who earned an automatic berth in the NAIA Men's Golf Championship, put together a 758 total, while the Bees were next at 794. Viterbo (Wis.) was third (795), followed by Mount Mercy (804), William Penn (835), Clarke (838), Iowa Wesleyan (857), Ashford (876) and Waldorf (997).
Viterbo's Derrick Meier took medalist honors and qualified individually for the NAIA national meet. He fired a 7-over-par 187 at the two-day event that was shortened from 54 to 45 holes due to inclement weather. The Grand View trio of Josh Manske, Rick Fee and Mike Slavin tied for second at 190. McConnell and Aaron Ahrendsen of Grand View tied for fifth at 192.
Mount Mercy junior Declan Hasson narrowly missed a top-10 finish, coming in 11th with a 199 total. Junior Ned Carter (205) tied for 15th, freshman Ryan Schrimper (208) tied for 19th and senior Ross McLaughlin (217) placed 30th in a 43-man field.
The Mustangs wrap up their spring schedule at the Clarke Spring Invitational on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Eagle Ridge South Golf Course in Galena, Ill.
