CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Seventh-seeded Grand View shot better than 50 percent from 3-point range and made 23 free throws in the second half to defeat sixth-seeded Mount Mercy, 77-62, in a Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Basketball Tournament semifinal on Friday at Hennessey Recreation Center.
The Vikings (17-12) built a 39-22 halftime advantage by shooting 53.6 percent from the floor, including a 6-of-9 showing from 3-point range. The Mustangs (19-12) never threatened after that as Grand View salted away the game at the free throw line, going 23-of-35 from the charity stripe after the break. The Vikings also finished 9-of-16 from beyond the arc.
Junior forward Chad Underwood scored 16 points for Mount Mercy and finishes the season in 12th place on Mount Mercy's career scoring chart with 1,213 points. He also grabbed six rebounds. Senior forward Sam Kenyi had nine points and 14 rebounds in his final game in a Mustang uniform. Junior guard Markus Cocroft and junior forward Troy Peter tallied nine points each.
Grand View had four players in double figures, led by Kevin Smith's 20 points to go along with seven rebounds. Kody Ingle made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points and eight boards. Josh Henry nailed four triples during a 14-point night and Allen Clark scored 11 of his 13 points from the free throw line. Clark also had four assists.
The Vikings will face top-seeded St. Ambrose for a shot at a national tournament berth in the championship game of the MCC Tournament on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport.
