Balanced Mustangs tame Wildcats

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A balanced scoring attack led the Mount Mercy men's basketball team to 78-74 defeat of Culver-Stockton in Wednesday's Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup at Hennessey Recreation Center.

After leading by a point at halftime, the Mustangs (7-4, 2-2 Heart) watched a double-digit lead evaporate after the break. The Wildcats (10-2, 2-2 Heart) led briefly before Mount Mercy took the lead for good to hand Culver-Stockton their second loss in a row after a 10-0 start.

RoyShawn Webb played all but a minute for the Mustangs, scoring 13 points to go along with three rebounds and four assists. Tyler Kelley finished with 12 points and five boards. Lavaris Duncan was a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Ryan Bartley and Brandon Jackson also had 10 points apiece.

Javon Modester and Zac Rzewnicki each scored a game-high 17 points for the Wildcats. Jim King chipped in 15 points, Quintin Wallace 13 off the bench. Rzewnicki also pulled down nine rebounds and had five assists. Modester tallied five boards, five assists, and three steals.

Mount Mercy has a non-conference contest at Viterbo on Saturday at 3:00 pm at R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium. After a short break for finals week, the Mustangs jump back into league action on Thursday, traveling to the Kehl Center in Dubuque to take on Clarke at 7:30 pm.
