Offense keys conference win
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy men's soccer team produced its highest scoring output in over a year in a 9-3 victory over Evangel in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Tuesday afternoon at Hadzic Field.
The Mustangs' nine goals were the most since a 9-1 defeat of Iowa Wesleyan in September 2019. Four of those came from reigning Heart of America Offensive Player of the Week Yu Sasaki (JR/Nara, Japan). Thomas Bean (JR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) added a pair of scores while Yuhei Matsushita (JR/Kinikawa, Japan), Andrija Mijatovic (SO/Zagreb, Croatia), and Manuel Prieto (FR/Lisbon, Portugal) also found the back of the net.
Mount Mercy (3-4-2, 3-3-2 Heart) out-shot Evangel, 23-9, including a 17-4 advantage in shots on goal. Lucca Munhoz (JR/Sao Paolo, Brazil) got the start in goal for the Mustangs, making one save during one half of play. Jose Perez Piqueras (SO/Madrid, Spain) recorded a clean sheet in the second half.
The Mustangs are on the road for three of their last four matches, beginning with a trip to MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. in Olathe, Kan.
