Mustang men second, women third at Rittgers Invitational

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy men's and women's track & field teams combined for seven event titles and finished second and third, respectively, at the Rittgers Invitational hosted by Coe on Friday at Clark Field.

Bre Nail continued her dominance in the shot put, shattering her own school record for the second week in a row while hitting the NAIA's automatic qualifying standard with a throw of 14.07m. That remains tops in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and fifth in the NAIA.

Haley Hartshorne in the high jump (1.45m), Ellen Kangas in the discus (39.67m), and Abby Hill in the javelin (37.35m) also claimed individual event titles for the Mustangs.

In men's action, event titles in the javelin, 4x100 meter relay, and 4x400 meter relay powered Mount Mercy to its runner-up finish. Nate Keiper won the javelin with a toss of 43.73m. He also raced on both championship relay squads. Ceondae Adams, Keiper, Jordan Schroeder, and Connor Christophersen won the 4x100 with a time of :42.36. The same four -- Keiper, Adams, Christophersen, and Schroeder -- cruised to the 4x400 title in 3:23.77.

Mount Mercy hosts its second and final home meet of the season this weekend, the Mustang Invitational. Action gets underway with field events on Saturday at 10:30 am at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex. The athletic department is also hosting their Do It For Danny event. Fans receive free admission to the meet with the donation of a personal hygiene item that will go to a local shelter.
