Mustangs Continue Strong Conference Play with Sweep Over Yellowjackets
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy University, boasting a 15-2 overall record and 10-2 in conference play, dominated Graceland University with a sweeping 3-0 victory on Saturday. The set scores were 25-14, 25-16, and 30-28. The Mustangs' offense was unstoppable, racking up a total of 44 kills, peaking at 16 in the second set.
In the opening set, Mount Mercy quickly asserted its dominance with a commanding 25-14 win, capitalizing on a series of unforced errors by the Yellowjackets. Brian Lynch spearheaded the offense with multiple kills, expertly set up by Alexandre Jette, who added several assists and a couple of service aces to his tally.
The Mustangs' defense was rock solid, anchored by Nikola Kovacevic and Pere Font Torres, who were instrumental in stifling Graceland's attacks.
The second set mirrored the first, with Mount Mercy seizing a 25-16 victory as Graceland struggled with miscues. Jette continued his playmaking prowess, facilitating Torres' impressive four-kill performance. Douglas Fofano matched this output with four kills of his own, while Torres further boosted the Mustangs with two service aces.
The Yellowjackets' attack faltered, highlighted by two critical errors from Jackson House, allowing Mount Mercy to maintain their lead comfortably.
The third set was a nail-biter, with Mount Mercy clinching a thrilling 30-28 win despite early setbacks. A pivotal service run by Lynch, featuring two aces, transformed a 5-5 tie into a 9-5 advantage, setting the momentum in the Mustangs' favor.
Key defensive plays by Matthew Swiatkowski and Torres, including a crucial final block against Kalanikapu Aona, thwarted Graceland's valiant comeback efforts. The Mustangs' relentless pressure forced crucial errors from the Yellowjackets, sealing their fate.
Fofano was a defensive stalwart, recording 13 digs and adding seven kills to the offensive effort. Sven Krieg led with 16 digs and contributed four kills, showcasing his versatility on the court. Kovacevic made his presence felt with five total blocks, while Torres shone offensively, racking up 11 kills on a .429 hitting percentage, along with three blocks.
For Graceland, Nairod Fonseca put up a commendable performance with six kills on ten attempts, achieving a .600 hitting percentage, and adding 11 assists. Hawk Richard was a defensive anchor, notching six digs and two blocks, including one solo, while also tallying four kills on 17 attempts. Aona was effective at the net with a .333 hitting percentage, four kills on nine attempts, and led the team with three block assists.
Looking ahead, the Mustangs will take on Grand View University on Tuesday, March 17 at 7 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, hoping to capitalize on their home-court advantage.
